Although the Online Ceramics Gallery brings you 22 brilliantly talented and influential contemporary studio potters – we haven’t finished yet! Paul Young will be the latest artist to join us. Paul is heavily influenced by traditional English and European slipware, particularly eighteenth century Staffordshire wares.

Paul Young pictured at his studio

Paul has over 25 years professional experience and is currently based in a Victorian Railway Station. Peter Ward, Director of Online Ceramics said; ‘When I first entered the world of ceramics over 30 years ago I worked for John Pollex who at that time produced beautiful slipware in the Thomas Toft tradition. So when looking for a potter who uses traditional slipware skills, I was very particular about what I wanted. I love the way Paul Young uses slipware, you can clearly see the Stafford lineage but Paul manages to give it a modern twist. Paul’s not afraid to break the rules. The net result is he produces some of the finest slipware in the UK’.

The sixteen new works by Paul will be uploaded to the gallery by the end of February along with new pots by Kevin de Choisy.

It is always an absolute pleasure visiting Kevin de Choisy at his Glastonbury home and studio. He is a thoroughly decent man and an amazing potter too. Visits to Kevin can never be rushed. He prepared a lovely lunch of soup and sandwiches and we talked for the next three hours about ceramics whilst choosing new pots for the Online Ceramics Gallery.

Kevin de Choisy holding a small canister teapot

In total we selected 17 absolutely gorgeous pieces of his work, including five teapots. Many of the pots will be added to this website over the next couple of weeks. A number of customers have previously enquired about the availability of Kevin’s teapots, so if you are interested please let Peter Ward know (sales@onlineceramics.com) and he will email you photos.

When Online Ceramics Gallery was only a concept, Peter Ward along with John Pollex drew up a wish list of the first ten potters. High up on that list was thrown earthenware specialist, Richard Phethean. When Peter approached Richard he was sceptical that an on-line gallery would succeed. Undeterred Peter went on to approach other potters willing to give it a try.

Over two years later in September 2012 Peter went to see Ceramics in the City at the Geffrye Museum in east London. During his visit Peter entered the raffle in support of the museum and won the prize – a large Richard Phethean oval vessel! Two months later whilst at the Oxford Ceramics Fair, Peter chatted with Richard, told him he had won the prize and reminded him of their conversation two and a half years earlier.

Richard Phethean earthenware

That night when Richard got home he took a look at the website and was impressed with the quality of the potters and functionally of the website. The next day Richard spoke with Peter and agreed to supply Online Ceramics. Two weeks later Peter visited Richard in his Banbury studio and selected 16 pieces for the website. Peter said ‘I’m extremely pleased that such an acclaimed potter as Richard Phethean has agreed to be represented by the Online Ceramics Galley, Richard’s earthenware work has filled an enormous gap – all thanks to spending £5 on some raffle tickets.’

Eddie Curtis and Margaret Curtis are holding a joint exhibition at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre, the UK’s premier gallery for studio pottery, in central London. Eddie and Margaret are highly regarded potters and are each ‘fellows’ of the prestigious British Craft Potters Association. The show entitled ‘New Forms, New Textures’ opened on 8 November and will run until 1 December.

Between them they have put together a breath-taking collection featuring 77 different pieces. The richness, quality and depth of the work is outstanding. Prices range from £50 (GBP) for the cutest sake cups by Margaret to a large bottle by Eddie costing £6,000 (GBP).

If you can’t get to London, here at the Online Ceramics Gallery we have a much more modest collection of Eddie’s work with prices ranging from £165 (GBP) to £565 (GBP) which he has produced using his distinct rich red copper glaze.

West Midlands based potter Craig Underhill produces vessels with texture and depth at his Stourbridge studio. Eager to provide you with the widest selection of works by our potters, the Online Ceramics Gallery have added seven new pots by Craig Underhill to the website. This means you can now enjoy 16 original works by Craig.

Peter Ward, Online Ceramics founder said ‘I invited Craig to join the Online Ceramics Gallery because no one else produces work quite like his. Craig manages to apply slips and glazes in such a painterly manner to his slab built forms that gives them a feeling of age and to an extent, decay. I know Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country area very well and his work often reminds me of the areas de-industrialisation.’

We are extremely pleased she has agreed to join us and we are excited to be able to bring you such a good selection of her work. Prices start at £65 GBP and go up to £315 GBP. All the vessels have been made through coiling and pinching and their surfaces are rich in texture made through a combination of slips and glazes.

Rachel has been working professionally for over 10 years, during which she worked as an assistant to Robin Welch. She has exhibited widely and has been a professional member of the British Craft Potters Association since 2001.

During our tours visiting some brilliant ceramic artists, Richard Godfrey stands out amongst them as the hardest working potter we have ever come across. Such is Richard’s creative output, Online Ceramics will be adding a second page in mid September, dedicated to his stunning one-off ceramic sculptures.

You can clearly see the influence of the south Devon coastline in these pieces. Evocative of the cliffs close by his studio, their rugged forms are juxtaposed against a wonderfully smooth white body. Richard has used a single oxide that provides the darker areas with red and yellow colouring giving the impression of algae that has built up over a millennia.

Don’t get alarmed, we still love and continue to stock Richard’s brightly coloured earthenware and will be adding a few new pieces in the next couple of weeks.
