Online Ceramics August tour

The last week of August was set aside for the Online Ceramics Gallery tour of potters. We started off with Walter Keeler in South Wales. Walter supplied us with some pots (mostly jugs and mugs). We then headed southwest and visited John Pollex who was taking part in an Open Studio exhibition. We also had a couple meals with John, one was at Platters Seafood Restaurant on Plymouth’s Barbican (John’s favourite eatery).

Then came a quick hop over to see the brilliant Richard Godfrey. His studio is in the beautiful South Devon countryside overlooking the sea. We caught Richard giving his two sons a master class in slab building.

We hadn’t finished with Devon. We headed over to the Devon Guild of Craftsmen Summer Show in Bovey Tracey. Really delighted to see porcelain thrower, Tim Gee, had been awarded the judges prize. Well deserved. It was a beautiful day, so we decided to make a surprise visit to earthenware potter, Penny Simpson, at Moretonhampstead. We took the long route back to Plymouth over stunning Dartmoor.

We finished our week off by driving down to Mousehole, at the tip of Cornwall, to pick up some work from Jack Doherty. Jack’s home has the most fantastic view of the sea, which is just at the end of his garden. Our final visit was to see Richard Phethean who had just relocated to Cornwall from Oxfordshire. He spent August kitting out his studio. He is now able to concentrate on making new work (which is good because he had almost no stock left) and running classes.
