The Station Master Potter!

Potters seem to seek out weird and wonderful places for their studios. Paul Young is no different – his studio is in a Victorian railway station in Shenton, Warwickshire, at the heart of England. The station has long since ceased to be used commercially thanks to the Beeching railway cuts in the early 1960s and has now become a heritage steam line.

It seems an apt setting for a potter like Paul Young whose work is firmly influenced by the past. Online Ceramics chose to represent Paul because although the roots of his work is in eighteenth century Staffordshire, he adds his own modern spin on traditional English slipware particularly when it comes to the use of colour. Plus, Paul has a great sense of humour that he manages to express in his work, just look at the horse’s expression in his ‘horse and rider’ ceramic sculpture.

Peter Ward, owner of Online Ceramics, visited Paul and selected a mixture of ceramic sculptures and functional work for the gallery. After they concluded business, they went on a walk through the beautiful surrounding countryside, passed the well where King Richard III was alleged to have taken his last drink, to the summit of the hill where the battle of Bosworth took place.

Peter said: ‘It was a good visit, I chose some really good examples of Paul’s work. I am particularly pleased with the ‘Dovecote’, Paul has put an amazing amount of work into that substantial piece. But my personal favourite is the ‘Mermaid figure group’, I just love the expressions on the faces of the characters.
