    • Artist Profile

Joanna Howells’ generously conceived porcelain, in which she predominantly works, has a crisp clarity and robustness that recalls some of the generously made work of Korean potters, not the more delicate work with which it is more readily associated. This is not to say that there isn’t a precision as well as a freedom about the way Howells throws, carves and alters. Having initially read medicine at Cambridge, she went on to study ceramics at Sir John Cass School of Art and at Harrow College of Higher Education. Joanna now lives and works in Glamorgan, South Wales, producing her very distinctive individual jars, jugs, bowls and other forms. Howells’ deep often pooling celadon glazing on broadly cut and faceted porcelain and stoneware surfaces is deeply satisfying.
